Department Brief Information

Physiotherapy is a medical profession that specializes in treatment of injuries and conditions that impact movement. It helps to restore, maintain patients mobility, function and well being. This is done through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and health and fitness.Physiotherapy encompasses rehabilitation, injury prevention and health promotion/fitness. The profession employs a holistic approach to treatment, looking at the patient's life style and engaging them in their own treatment.

 

Physiotherapy can therefore be defined as a treatment method that focuses on the science of movement and helps people to restore, maintain and maximize their physical strength, function, motion and overall well being by addressing the under lying physical issues.
Presently it is a unique profession that is at the center of medical profession. Currently we run BSc or BPT which is a 5 year course and we will commence DPT soon which is a 6 year Clinical Doctorate degree which is unclassified. Students are to be exposed clinically and should accomplish 2500 Clinical posting experience hours in accredited Hospital. We actually run a 12 calendar year session since students continue in their Clinical posting, while others are on holidays. Graduates of Physiotherapy are highly rated in Nigerian, Europe, USA, Canada, UK, Australia to mention but a few.
We are mostly affected by the current brain drain to the nations mentioned earlier. Physiotherapy jobs also abound in Teaching Hospitals, State Hospitals, health centers, nursing homes, and sports commissions. Our current graduates are already booked for jobs in UK, USA and Canada.
Patients may be referred to or seek assistance from a Physiotherapist for a Variety of health issues and receive valuable assistance.
Physiotherapy offer treatment relating to the following conditions:
• Cardiorespiratory: providing support, prevention and rehabilitation for people suffering from diseases and injuries that affect the heart and lungs, such as asthma
• cancer, palliative care and lymphedema treating, managing or preventing fatigue, pain, muscle and joint stiffness and deconditioning.
• Incontinence: managing and preventing Incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction.
• Women's health concerns: addressing health issues surrounding pregnancy, birth, post partum care, brest feeding, menopause, bed wetting, prolapsed, loss of bladder or bowel control.
• Musculoskeletal: preventing and treatment of clients with Musculoskeletal conditions such as neck and back pain.
• Neurological: promoting movement and quality of life in patients who have had severe brain or spinal cord damage from trauma or who suffers from neurological diseases such as stroke, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
• Orthopedic: helping patients prevent or manage acute or chronic orthopedic conditions such as arthritis and armputations.
• Pain managing or preventing pain and its impact on function in patients.
• Geriatric condition: the elderly are also managed for green stick fracture, osteomalacia, osteomyelitis, osteoporosis, stroke, Parkinson, diabetes, debility, imbalance.
• Pediatric conditions: children diseases such as Erbspalsy, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, neonatal jaundice and retarded growth.
